Why You'll Love It

A CLEAN SWEEP.

A bestseller for good reason. This gentle cream cleanser leans on three plant oils to dissolve makeup and grime, keeping your skin's natural oil balance and pH intact in the process. Sensitive types swear by it, but the fan club extends well beyond. Think clean, soft skin, minus the tight, squeaky finish you might be used to.

Cleansing often feels like a chore. Sometimes quite literally, as though your skin's good stuff is being dragged off alongside the day's dirt and makeup. Not here. Completely detergent-free, the creamy formula nourishes skin instead of stripping it.

Our goal is simple: leave your skin in better shape than we found it. That means zero surfactants in the formula, so the protective oils that keep the peace can stay right where they're needed.

Camellia Oil brings the omegas, plus more than 87% unsaturated fatty acids, conditioning and hydrating during the cleanse itself. Castor Oil pulls impurities to the surface, with its ricinoleic acid soothing along the way. Sweet Almond Oil rounds out the trio as a soft emollient that breaks down excess sebum without going too far.

The included Dual-Effect Face Cloth (textured muslin for gentle exfoliation on one side, soft terry for a finishing sweep on the other) means a thorough clean without reaching for extra products.

Directions

Massage 1–2 pumps onto dry skin, working across your face, neck and eye area. Don't rush. The camellia and castor oils are busy dissolving makeup, sunscreen and the day's grime, so give them a minute to do their job.

Dampen your Dual-Effect Cloth and sweep away the cleanser with the textured muslin side, using gentle circular motions. It buffs off dead skin cells while lifting everything else away. Flip to the soft terry side for a final pass around the eyes and any leftover residue.

Skin should feel soft, calm and hydrated afterward. If it feels tight, something's off (and it isn't this cleanser).

For very sensitive skin, once a day in the evening is plenty. Pair with Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil as your first step if you're double cleansing or taking off heavier makeup.

Key Ingredients

  • Camellia

A prized oil from the seeds of the Camellia flower. Rich in Omega 6 and polyphenol antioxidants, it leaves skin moist and supple. And never stripped.

  • Rose

We use Damask Rose Otto oil – the Rolls Royce of rose oils. Not only does it smell like a dream, it helps the skin to hold onto moisture and helps irritated and dull skin bounce back to health quickly too.

Sarah Brown, Pai Founder

"On Pai’s doorstep is Chiswick House, home to one of the last surviving ‘Middlemist Red’ Camellias in the world. Camellia sits at the heart of this gentle cleansing cream which keeps skin beautifully soft and balanced. It was the seventh product to be born into our range and we’ve named it after John Middlemist, who introduced this rare bloom to the UK."

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose between Phaze and Middlemist Seven?

Phaze is a gently foaming face wash with mild exfoliating properties, designed for oily and combination skin that's prone to breakouts or congestion. Middlemist Seven is a richer, surfactant-free cream cleanser that actively conditions while it cleans, making it the better choice for dry, reactive, or sensitive skin. If your skin feels tight or stripped after washing, Middlemist Seven is the one to try.

What makes Middlemist Seven different from other gentle cleansers?

Most cleansers, even those labelled "gentle" or "for sensitive skin", rely on surfactants that can strip the skin's protective lipids and disrupt its pH. Middlemist Seven contains zero surfactants of any kind. It uses a trio of plant oils (castor, camellia, sweet almond) to dissolve dirt and makeup on contact, so your skin's moisture barrier, acid mantle, and natural oil balance stay completely intact.

When should I use this in my routine?

Middlemist Seven is the first step in your skincare routine. Massage 1-2 pumps onto dry skin, remove with the dampened Dual-Effect Cloth, then follow with your serum and moisturiser. You can also pair it with Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil as a double cleanse: Light Work first to dissolve heavy makeup and SPF, then Middlemist Seven to deep-cleanse and condition.

How often should I use Middlemist Seven?

For most skin types we recommend cleansing with Middlemist Seven in the morning and evening.

If you have very sensitive skin, it's best to keep your routine as simple as possible and cleanse just once a day in the evening.

Does Middlemist Seven remove heavy makeup and sunscreen?

It removes all everyday makeup, including waterproof mascara. The plant oils dissolve makeup on contact without any need for surfactants. For days with heavier makeup or high-SPF sunscreen, try a double cleanse: Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil first to cut through the heavy layers, then Middlemist Seven to deep-cleanse and condition.

Can I remove the cleanser without the cloth?

Not effectively. Because Middlemist Seven is 100% detergent-free, it won't emulsify with water and rinse off the way a surfactant cleanser does. The included Dual-Effect Face Cloth is integral to how it works: the muslin side provides gentle mechanical exfoliation and lifts dissolved impurities, while the soft terry side does a final sweep for delicate areas like around the eyes. Using the cloth also means you avoid rinsing with tap water, which can disrupt skin pH, particularly in hard water areas.

How do I care for and replace the Dual-Effect Face Cloth?

Rinse your cloth thoroughly after each use and hang it to dry. Machine wash regularly at a low temperature to keep it fresh and hygienic. Over time the muslin fibres will soften and lose their gentle exfoliating texture, so replacement cloth packs are available separately when yours needs retiring.

Is Middlemist Seven suitable for oily or breakout-prone skin?

Yes. The formula is non-comedogenic, and Sweet Almond Oil helps dissolve the excess sebum responsible for clogging pores. Oil-based cleansing also avoids the rebound oiliness that can happen when surfactant cleansers strip too much and your skin overproduces oil to compensate. That said, if you prefer a lightly foaming wash and are actively prone to breakouts and congestion, Phaze may be a better daily fit.

Is Middlemist Seven suitable for eczema-prone or rosacea-prone skin?

Yes. It's passed 96-hour human repeat insult patch testing specifically on eczema-prone and sensitive skin volunteers. Because there are zero surfactants in the formula, it avoids the barrier disruption that published research links to detergent cleansing, where surfactant molecules penetrate the stratum corneum and interact with epidermal proteins and lipids, causing tightness, dryness, and flare-ups. For many people with reactive skin, switching away from surfactant-based cleansers resolves issues that serums and moisturisers alone can't fix.

Is Middlemist Seven safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Yes. Middlemist Seven is confirmed safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It's COSMOS Organic certified, 100% natural origin, and has been 96-hour patch tested for tolerance on sensitive and eczema-prone skin.

What are the key ingredients in Middlemist Seven?

Organic Camellia Seed Oil (over 87% unsaturated fatty acids plus natural squalene) replenishes skin lipids and reduces water loss during the cleanse. Organic Castor Oil, roughly 90% ricinoleic acid, is the primary dirt-lifting agent, and published research identifies ricinoleic acid as a non-pungent anti-inflammatory that reduces oedema and inflammatory markers. Damask Rose Otto, steam-distilled from organic Bulgarian rose petals, contributes over 300 bioactive compounds including flavonoids and terpenes that support antioxidant activity and moisture retention.

What certifications does Middlemist Seven have?

Middlemist Seven is COSMOS Organic certified by the Soil Association (100% natural origin, 72% organic content), Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free, and registered vegan. It's also dermatologist tested and approved, non-comedogenic, and has passed 96-hour human repeat insult patch testing on sensitive and eczema-prone skin.

Why should I choose Middlemist Seven over Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil?

They do different jobs. Light Work is a first-step oil cleanser that emulsifies with water and rinses off, designed for quick, efficient removal of heavy makeup and SPF. Middlemist Seven is a richer cream cleanser removed with the Dual-Effect Cloth, designed to condition and nourish your skin during the cleanse. If your priority is skin that feels soft and replenished after washing, Middlemist Seven is the one. Many people use both: Light Work first, then Middlemist Seven.

Gentle cleanser

"This cleanser was recommended for my breakout skin. It is gentle, smells amazing and is easy to use with the cloth provided. I use it twice a day instead of using facial soap and with the other Pai products it has balanced out my skin. I’d highly recommend it."

Kathleen W. (5/5)

Cleanest Cleanser in the market!

"I was losing hope in finding a good product with clean ingredients. Pai has it all. By far I love this cleanser it doesn’t dry out my skin like others have. I truly appreciate the 2 in 1 cloth. The material is phenomenal, cotton and no bad fibers. I love how one side is a bit rough to ensure cleaning and the other is soft and gentle. I have sensitive skin and I was able to use both sides. I started with one towel and then went and ordered a 4 pack. Highly recommend!"

I've been using this cleanser

"I've been using this cleanser for over a year now, alongside one of the Pai moisturisers and I absolutely love it! it is so gentle on my sensitive skin, leaves my skin feeling cleansed and refreshed and lasts for a long time compared to other brands I've used. Plus, the cleansing cloth is always such a great addition and works great if you enjoy a hot cloth facial after a cleanse too. I love the Pai brand and what they stand for."

I tried both, Middlemist Seven and the new Phaze, love them both but Phaze leaves my skin a little clearer but also less moisturized. I am thinking of using them together as a double cleanse, do you think that is a good idea?
Hi Johanna, Thank you for getting in touch. We are so pleased to hear that you love both cleansers! You may prefer to use Phaze on alternate nights or you could do Middlemist Seven Cleanser first and Phaze as your second cleanse a few times a week. Pai Customer Experience Team Member
I often wash my face in the shower. Is this cleanser still effective if applied to damp skin? Thanks!
Hi JS, Thank you for getting in touch. You may find it helpful to not wash your face in the shower as the water is hotter than we realise on our face. Over time this can be harsh and very drying on the skin. Middlemist Seven is best used on dry skin and then removed with lukewarm water and the cloth, follow with a final rinse of water. If you like to use a cleanser on damp skin you could try our new Phaze cleanser.
