Some products start with an ingredient discovery that changes everything we thought we knew about formulation. Others come from listening to you tell us what doesn't exist yet. But British Summer Time Glow, our hybrid sunscreen, started with an accidental discovery.

Sarah Brown, our Founder, was mixing The Impossible Glow drops into British Summer Time every morning. So were thousands of our customers. But getting the proportions right was fiddly, especially at 7am with a toothbrush in one hand.

"Louise, our Global Marketing Director, and I were discussing this DIY trend," says Sarah. "We realised we could solve it properly. Create one product that delivers both the glow and the protection, perfectly balanced. Once we had the idea, we couldn't let it go."

Making daily SPF irresistible

The concept might have started simply, but the mission went deeper. Most people know they should wear SPF daily. Most don't.

"We thought: what if we made a sunscreen so luminous, so skin-perfecting, that skipping it would feel like missing out?" Sarah explains. "A true hybrid that protects, primes, and gives that lit-from-within glow. Something that makes SPF the easiest yes in your morning routine."

We tasked our chemists with creating exactly that. A mineral sunscreen that people would reach for first, not reluctantly apply last. And we needed it fast.

When formulation fights back

This was our fastest product development ever. We lost an hour to the clocks changing (hence the name), and formulation threw up surprises daily.

"The obvious approach was combining our existing formulas," says John Monoyioudis, Head of R&D. "That lasted about five minutes. The two products actively rejected each other. We had to rebuild from scratch, and material shortages meant constant pivoting."

Even when the formula worked, a bigger question loomed: how much glow is too much glow?

"Finding a universal shade took weeks of testing," John continues. "Too subtle and it's pointless. Too strong and it only works for certain skin tones. We needed luminosity that translates across every complexion."

After countless iterations, we found it. A shade that adds radiance, not colour. It eliminates the mineral sunscreen white cast while creating a complexion-perfecting finish that works as primer, protector, and instant skin confidence.

What makes this formula special

We could have made this formula more complex just because we can. But complexity without purpose is just showing off. BST Glow exists because it solves real problems.

"Count the 100% natural, mineral-only SPFs with instant glow and COSMOS certification," says John. "Globally, you'll run out of fingers fast. This formula is genuinely rare."

The technical achievement goes beyond the glow. We've combined non-nano zinc oxide (broad spectrum UV protection) with iron oxides that block up to 86% of blue light. That tint isn't just cosmetic. It's functional photoprotection against visible light, the wavelengths most sunscreens ignore.

Add our Cotton Callus Culture (plant stem cells that help skin recover from light damage) and Karanja Oil (natural UV-boosting flavonoids), and you have five layers of active light defence in one product.

Ruby Notay, our Quality Manager, has a different perspective: "Both formulas are notoriously hard to clean off equipment. Combining them created our toughest cleaning challenge yet. And we can only use COSMOS-approved cleaning agents. We're still optimising the process."

Why British Summer Time?

The name was never in question. Our original British Summer Time sunscreen has protected sensitive skin since launch. Adding 'Glow' was the obvious evolution.

"BST captures something specific about being British," Sarah explains. "When the clocks spring forward, everything shifts. Even if the weather stays grey, there's this collective optimism. Longer days. Light returning. The promise that summer exists somewhere ahead."

"As a London brand, we wanted to bottle that feeling. Not the British summer itself (we're realistic), but that moment of possibility. That state of mind."

The science of making SPF desirable

Getting people to actually wear SPF daily isn't a marketing problem. It's about removing every barrier to use.

White cast? The iron oxides eliminate it while adding luminosity.
Heavy texture? Fast-absorbing formula that works as primer.
Extra step? Replaces three products: SPF, blue light defence, complexion perfector.
Sensitivity concerns? 96-hour patch tested on reactive skin.

In trials with 103 subjects, 88% said it created a smooth base for makeup. 83% reported instantly more luminous skin. These aren't courtesy scores. They reflect what happens when protection becomes genuinely pleasurable.

BST Glow proves mineral sunscreen doesn't mean compromise. It means smarter chemistry. The glow isn't just pretty. It's functional photoprotection doing exactly what your skin needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is British Summer Time Glow and how is it different from the original British Summer Time SPF?

British Summer Time Glow is a 2-in-1 illuminating mineral sunscreen that combines SPF 30 protection with a radiant, skin-priming finish. Unlike the original British Summer Time, it includes iron oxides and mica alongside non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which means it offers enhanced visible light (blue light) defence, reduces white cast, and gives skin a luminous glow in a single step.

Why does the tinted formula in British Summer Time Glow actually improve sun protection?

The iron oxides (red, yellow, and black) that create the glow aren't just cosmetic. They block up to 86% of high-energy visible (HEV) blue light, which standard mineral sunscreens based on zinc oxide alone don't fully cover. Research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that formulations combining zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxides achieved 71.9% to 85.6% HEV attenuation across key wavelengths.

How was British Summer Time Glow developed?

It started when Pai's founder Sarah Brown noticed customers were already mixing The Impossible Glow drops into the original British Summer Time every morning. The lab team initially tried combining the two existing formulas directly, but had to reformulate from scratch due to compatibility and material availability challenges. The result is a COSMOS-certified, 100% natural formula that took extensive shade testing to find a universally flattering finish.

Is British Summer Time Glow suitable for sensitive or reactive skin?

Yes. It uses non-nano mineral filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) that sit on the skin's surface rather than absorbing into it, which makes them inherently gentler than chemical sunscreens that convert UV to heat. The formula is 96-hour patch tested for tolerance on reactive skin, certified COSMOS Natural, and free from fragrance, essential oils, alcohol, and silicones.

Can British Summer Time Glow replace my primer and sunscreen?

That's exactly what it's designed to do. Mica reflects light for a "lit from within" luminosity while the iron oxides create a natural tint that works as a complexion-perfecting base. In an independent trial of 103 people, 88% agreed it works well as a smooth, even base and 83% said skin looks instantly more luminous.
