Here's what's actually happening when your environment disrupts your skin.

Hard water: the mineral problem

London water is basically liquid limestone. The high mineral content (calcium and magnesium) disrupts your skin's natural lipid barrier, pulling moisture out and leaving irritation behind. Studies show hard water increases transepidermal water loss by up to 35% and worsens eczema symptoms in 91% of sufferers.

The double whammy: mineral deposits stop cleansers from rinsing properly. That residue sits on your skin, blocking pores and triggering inflammation. You use more product to compensate, which means more surfactants stripping your barrier. It's a perfect storm of irritation.

UK water hardness by city:

  • Soft: Leeds, Swansea, Truro
  • Hard: Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle
  • Very hard: Bristol, London, Southampton

International water hardness:

  • Soft: New York, Sydney, Vancouver
  • Hard: San Diego, Houston
  • Very hard: Adelaide, Washington DC

The fix: invest in a shower filter (they start at £30) or switch to cream cleansers that work without water. Our Light Work dissolves everything without needing hard water to foam.

Humidity: too much, too little, always wrong

Low humidity (under 30%) turns your skin into a raisin. The dry air literally pulls water from your skin cells, disrupting barrier function and triggering that tight, flaky feeling. Indoor heating makes it worse, dropping humidity levels to desert conditions.

High humidity (over 70%) brings different problems. Sweat can't evaporate properly, so it sits on your skin mixing with sebum and dead cells. Perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The result: increased breakouts.

The science: your skin maintains optimal function at 40-60% humidity. Most UK homes in winter hover around 20%. Most tropical cities sit at 80%+. Neither supports optimal skin function.

Pollution: the invisible ager

City air contains particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These microscopic particles are 20 times smaller than your pores. They penetrate deep, triggering oxidative stress that breaks down collagen and elastin.

Research from the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that exposure to PM2.5 increases age spots by 25% and wrinkles by 20%. The mechanism: pollution particles generate reactive oxygen species that damage DNA and accelerate cellular ageing. They also disrupt your skin's microbiome, weakening its natural defence system.

Antioxidants are your first line of defence. Our C-2 Believe delivers stabilised vitamin C and vitamin E to neutralise free radicals before they can cause damage.

Temperature extremes: the moisture thief

Central heating drops indoor humidity to 10-20%. Air conditioning isn't much better, cycling the same dry air and harbouring bacteria in filters that rarely get cleaned. Both create a moisture gradient that pulls hydration from your skin.

The temperature swing itself causes problems. Moving from a heated office to freezing streets triggers rapid vasodilation and constriction. Result: broken capillaries, increased sensitivity, and that angry red flush that takes hours to calm down.

The urban skin survival guide

You can't control your city's water supply or air quality. But you can build a routine that fights back:

Morning: Gentle cleanse (skip if your skin feels balanced), antioxidant serum, moisturiser with ceramides, SPF. The goal: protection.

Evening: Double cleanse to remove pollution particles, hydrating toner to rebalance pH, barrier-repair moisturiser. The goal: recovery.

Weekly: Gentle exfoliation to prevent pollution buildup, hydrating mask to counteract environmental moisture loss.

The bottom line: your environment is constantly attacking your skin barrier. The more urban your lifestyle, the more defensive your skincare needs to be. That means fewer actives, more barrier support, and ingredients that actually understand what city living does to your face.

Have you noticed your skin changing after a move? We'd love to hear what worked (or didn't) for you.
