When we relaunched our much-loved Hello Sunshine SPF as British Summer Time Sensitive Sunscreen, the questions started flooding in. Turns out, SPF is the skincare step that makes sensitive souls most nervous. Thick formulas, potential breakouts, pregnancy concerns, that nagging feeling you should reapply every two hours (spoiler: you probably don't need to).
Here's the thing: SPF is non-negotiable for healthy skin. Full stop. But finding one that works with sensitive skin, not against it? That's where things get tricky. We spent months reformulating British Summer Time to be the sunscreen that anxious skin types can actually trust.
Let's answer your most pressing SPF questions. No waffle, just the science you need.
Should I wear SPF on top of moisturiser or instead of it?
Always on top.
British Summer Time has hydrating properties (thank the jojoba oil), but it's not a replacement for your moisturiser. SPF is the protective final layer in your routine, not the hydrating step. Apply your moisturiser first, let it fully absorb, then add your SPF. This creates the best base for both products to do their jobs properly.

Will SPF make my acne worse?
Not if it's formulated properly.
Traditional SPFs feel like you're plastering your face because they rely on creating a thick physical barrier. That thickness is what clogs pores and triggers breakouts. British Summer Time uses a different approach: zinc oxide for protection, jojoba oil to maintain skin balance, and a texture that doesn't feel like spackling paste on your face.
The non-negotiable rule for acne-prone skin? Double cleanse every evening. Even if you skip makeup, SPF needs proper removal. Our Double Cleanse Bundle (Light Work followed by Middlemist Seven) dissolves SPF without stripping your barrier. Skip this step and yes, you'll break out, but that's the cleansing routine, not the SPF.
Do I really need to reapply SPF throughout the day?
For most people, no.
British Summer Time is designed to last all day under makeup during normal indoor life. The "reapply every two hours" rule comes from beach and outdoor sports studies where you're sweating, swimming, or towelling off. If you're going from house to office to lunch to home, one morning application is fine.
The exception: prolonged direct sun exposure. Garden party? Beach walk? Festival? Then yes, you need to reapply. For normal daily life, one morning application does the job.

Is British Summer Time safe during pregnancy?
From the second trimester onwards, yes.
The only pregnancy consideration is the essential oils. If you're comfortable with them from week 13 onwards, you're good to go. We're cautious because pregnancy naturally makes you more selective about what goes on your skin. For complete peace of mind from day one, check out our pregnancy-safe collection, which excludes all essential oils.
The zinc oxide (our active sun filter) is completely pregnancy safe. Mineral sunscreens are what dermatologists recommend during pregnancy over chemical filters.
Can I use this SPF if I have eczema?
Yes. We patch test everything on eczema-prone volunteers.
British Summer Time uses non-nano zinc oxide (sits on top of skin rather than penetrating), jojoba oil (closest botanical match to skin's own sebum), and zero known irritants. No chemical filters, no alcohol, no fragrance beyond the natural scent of the ingredients. If your eczema-prone skin can handle anything, it can handle this.
Quick-fire FAQ round
Is it gluten-free?
The formula is gluten-free, though there are wheat-derived ingredients. The gluten proteins don't make it through the extraction process, so you're safe.
Will it work on dry skin?
Absolutely. The jojoba oil base actively supports skin hydration. Zinc can be drying in poorly formulated products, but when balanced with the right oils (as it is here), it actually helps lock moisture in.
Can I recycle the packaging?
Yes. The tube is sugar cane polyethylene (goes in your normal recycling). The cap is polypropylene (check your local recycling accepts PP). Wash both out and recycle separately.
The bottom line on sensitive skin SPF
SPF doesn't have to be the enemy of sensitive skin. British Summer Time proves you can have serious sun protection (SPF 30, broad spectrum) without the usual trade-offs. No white cast. No breakouts. No irritation. Just skin that's protected and happy about it.
Still nervous? Start with a patch test behind your ear. If you can handle any SPF, you can handle this one. We've done the testing so you don't have to learn the hard way.
