Your skin's telling you something. Maybe it's the parade of new products you've been trying, or the fact that your bathroom cabinet looks like a beauty hall stockroom. When your complexion feels overwhelmed, confused, or just plain angry, it's time to strip things back.

A skincare detox isn't about juice cleanses or punishing routines. It's about giving your skin a chance to remember what it's actually meant to do. Time to reset your routine and build habits that'll serve your skin all year long.

1. Stop product-hopping

We've all been there. Your skin breaks out or feels dry, so you panic-buy three new serums, a miracle cream, and that TikTok-famous treatment everyone's raving about. By the end of the week, your face doesn't know what hit it.

Your skin needs consistency like plants need regular watering. Product-hopping creates the same stress cycle as yo-yo dieting. Every time you introduce something new, your skin has to adjust. Throw five new things at it in a week, and you're asking for trouble.

Find what works. Stick with it. Give products at least four weeks before deciding they're not right for you.

2. Get back to basics

Sometimes the smartest thing you can do for your skin is the simplest. Strip your routine back to cleanse, hydrate, and protect. That's it.

For sensitive skin that needs a reset, try our Cleanse & Calm Bundle. These two products work together to calm irritation and rebuild your skin's protective barrier. The kit includes our Middlemist Seven Cream Cleanser (with organic cotton cloth) and The Anthemis Moisturiser, both in travel sizes perfect for testing what works.

Match your products to your actual skin type, not what you think it should be. And if you're reaching for anything with alcohol, synthetic fragrances, or sulphates, put it back. Your barrier function will thank you.

3. Become an ingredients detective

Knowing what's in your skincare is like knowing what's in your food. Once you start reading labels, you can't stop. And that's exactly where you need to be.

There are simple alcohols such as isopropyl or ethanol, and fatty alcohol which are thicker in nature and have names such as cetyl or behenyl. See the difference? One strips your skin raw, the other actually helps. Sulfates? They foam beautifully and strip your skin bare. Not the trade-off you want.

For sensitive skin, the no-go list includes:

  • methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben
  • Denatured alcohol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol
  • Synthetic fragrances (often hidden as "parfum")
  • Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), sodium laureth sulphate (SLES)
  • Petrochemicals and mineral oils

Our entire range is formulated without these irritants. Because sensitive skin has enough to deal with.

4. Feed your skin from within

Your skin is your largest organ, and like every organ, it runs on what you feed it. Oily fish, leafy greens, nuts, and proper hydration aren't just good-for-you clichés. They're the building blocks of healthy skin.

Think more plants, fewer processed foods. Your skin runs on what you feed it. If you're dealing with persistent sensitivity, eczema, or psoriasis, this approach is worth exploring.

Cut back on refined sugars while you're at it. Your skin (and everything else) will thank you. For more on how diet affects your skin, check out our guide: 'Five a Day' Focus: Diet.

5. Give stress the boot

Here's what your skin does when you're stressed: everything you don't want it to. Break out. Flare up. Get sensitised. Go into overdrive.

Cortisol, your stress hormone, doesn't just make you feel wired. It kicks inflammation into high gear and can trigger or worsen conditions like acne and eczema. Over time, it even messes with collagen production. Stressed skin ages faster. Simple as that.

Find what actually relaxes you. Not what Instagram says should relax you. Actual relaxation. Yoga, reading, walking, whatever switches off your mental chatter for a bit. For science-backed ways to dial down stress, read 'Five a Day' Focus: Sleep & Stress.

Good skin isn't complicated. It just requires paying attention to what actually works. Start simple. Stay consistent.
